DAY 1: After being met at the airport in Nairobi, drive to the Fairview Hotel. It is a country hotel in the city, offering friendly service, good food and comfortable accommodation, within 5 acres of luxuriant tranquil gardens. Its 1930’s architecture is expressed in Nairobi blue stone and countless arched windows.
OVERNIGHT : FAIRVIEW HOTEL,
NAIROBI
DAY 2: Leaving Nairobi set off on safari driving north past the massive peaks of Mount Kenya to the Ark. Stop first for lunch at the Aberdare Country Club. In the late afternoon drive up to the lodge. Set in a large grassy glade in the thick forest, it is a very popular place for game, all of which come for the water, the salt and to wallow in the mud. At night powerful floodlights illuminate the scene allowing one to watch the activities of elephant, rhino and buffalo in addition to bushbuck, giant forest hog, bushpig and smaller nocturnal creatures. By day one may see colobus monkeys high in the treetops. Hyrax and bushbabies cry at night and occasionally the bark of a leopard is heard.
OVERNIGHT AT THE ARK LODGE,
ABERDARE FOREST
DAY 3, 4 & 5 : Drive further north to Sarova Lodge in Shaba National Park. This is a real oasis in the middle of some very dry country, but it has a fair amount of game as there are fresh water springs in the park and so the game comes to drink. Also the Ewaso Nyiro river flows through Shaba Reserve. While here you will have a chance to see elephant, lion, cheetah, crocodile and quite a lot of plains game, including Grevy zebra, reticulated giraffe, water buck, grant gazelle, oryx, and warthog. The bird life is fantastic too. Accommodation at the lodge is in large stone-built rooms overlooking the river and there is a fabulous swimming pool.
THREE NIGHTS: Sarova Lodge,
SHABA NATIONAL RESERVE
DAY 6 & 7: Kenya is renowned for its beauty and diversity, not only of the wildlife, but also of the tribes and the incredible scenery. In Sabuk you can experience this bigger picture of Africa, the perfect getaway for adults as well as children. Explore the vast expanses of Northern Kenya on foot and on camel, a remarkable beast of burden. Notice the tiny flowers nestled in the grass, the basking lizards on lichen-coated rocks and the striking people still proud of their traditional lifestyle and dress. Start the day with a healthy breakfast and break for a delicious lunch in camp. Finally; dinner under the stars.
TWO NIGHTS IN SABUK,
SAMBURULAND
DAY 8 & 9: The remote mountains of Northern Kenya, rising high above semi-desert country, are dense with forest. Driving west through this fabulous scenery, the land finally drops away into the Great Rift Valley and Lake Baringo. The lake can be explored by boat, approaching to within a few feet of hippopotamus and crocodile. The tented camp on its island in the middle is wonderfully picturesque and high up beside the swimming pool one can look down over the entire lake and hundreds of square miles of open country stretching away to distant mountains. The spectacular Lake Bogoria to the south teems with half a million birds, a pink sheen of flamingo on the water with a backdrop of high cliffs and steam from the many hot springs.
TWO NIGHTS AT ISLAND CAMP,
LAKE BARINGO
DAY 10 : Built in 1920 by Lord Francis Scott, a prominent early settler; this house is one of the grandest examples of colonial architecture in country. It is set in the middle of a five thousand acre farm, high up on the slopes of Londiani Mountain, a forest and bamboo shrouded volcano, a few miles from Lake Nakuru. Accommodating up to ten people, the food is excellent, with homegrown vegetables and the magnificent gardens boast a croquet lawn and tennis court. There are horses here; the farm and the mountain providing more than adequate countryside to explore.
OVERNIGHT DELORAINE HOUSE,
RIFT VALLEY
DAY 11, 12 & 13: Leaving mid-morning and taking a picnic lunch, drive from here through the beautiful tea plantations of Kericho to the Masai plains of Western Kenya. From July to November the area is usually host to hordes of migrating wildebeest and the chance of seeing a big cat in action is good. At any time of the year, the odd blood-thirsty scene with lions springing from cover or cheetah running down their prey may be witnessed but this violence gives way to tranquil views of endless herds; buffalo, topi, zebra and gazelle too. Impossibly tall giraffe gaze down curiously through their long eyelashes. Masai with their cattle look on. Motor vehicles bring one close to the game and evening walks are filled with sounds and smells of Africa and snorting impala and scampering baboons. Rekero, situated close to the Mara, is a small exclusive camp. The meals consist of wholesome farmhouse fare and the friendly capable staff will look after you.
THREE NIGHTS AT REKERO FARM,
MASAI MARA
DAY 14: Leaving the Mara, take a schedule flight to Nairobi where you can visit the museum or do some shopping, then spend the evening at Fairview hottel before your flight home.
